Gossip Girl 1x08

Gossip Girl 1x08

Blair:
Blair's church-outfit cracks me up. You can tell that she just sees her life as a movie. "Succumbed to inebriation, performed in a speakeasy, and surrendered my virtue to a self-absorbed pig." This girl cracks me up.  I wonder why she is so insistent that she needs to be with Nate. So far in the series he's cheated, ignored her, and pretty much existed in a pot-haze. The boy's cute but not *that* cute. Also, it's pretty sad that she actually does know how to be a good girlfriend - she loves him, and worries about him, knows that it's important to communicate - but when it gets to the relationship itself, she's so consumed by the rules of what she should do - make him chase her, plan the whole masqued ball - that they *don't* communicate. And she has such faith in him, and is so utterly desperate for him to love her that it kind of breaks my heart. The look on her face when she asked Chuck if he liked her was (in my mind) a mix of shocked and kind of excited/amazed.  I mean, at the base I feel like she just wants people to like her, even if it's not the guy she had initially hoped for.

Chuck/Blair:
I love how Chuck and Blair are absolutely on the same wavelength. Blair can cut through Chuck's bullshit to realize that he likes her because she knows how he operates. But she can't realize that Nate is acting so unbelievably fishy (or at least she doesn't want to admit it). How much do I adore her wrenching Chuck's head down by the hair while greeting her guests at the party? It cracked me up. And their little exchange, 'you forget who you're talking to'/ 'no, you forget who *you're* talking to!'  (or something like that) And don't even get me started on the butterflies in Chuck's stomach. I love that they have two levels to them - they can keep pace with each other's bickering and conniving, and then be sweet too. Of course, a part of me (the part that's distrustful of Chuck) is worried that Chuck is playing her - 'bad cop' telling her that Nate is using her, 'good cop' giving her the necklace and acting sweet. But I like to think that Blair's got enough walls and levels of fucked-up-ness that she's aware of the possibility, and is just choosing not to go there because she's hurt and wants to be comforted and feel loved. I am really way too fond of Blair's character. Also, the look on Chuck's face when Blair walks off in tears didn't look calculating for once (although it might be my own wishful thinking). And when he kissed her shoulder!  *dies*

Nate and Chuck:
That clip in the hotel room cracked me up. I'm also pretty amused about how Chuck manipulates Nate.  "Don't cave to your parents wishes if they're not your desires." Oh god, he and Blair are made for each other, what with their mutual penchant for overblown statements. But I like how you can see Chuck torn between feeling for Nate, his best friend,  and manipulating him so that he can make a play for Blair. And of course manipulation wins out ><. I was hoping that Chuck would explain that Blair doesn't deserve to be used by Nate this, but I guess Chuck's mind doesn't really run along those lines.

Nate's family:
OK, seriously, they *still* think that if the Nate/Blair arranged marriage goes through, then Blair's mom will let a fraudulent, embezzling, cokehead handle her company? I think the whole family must be on crack. Except for Nate, who is the only adult in the whole family, which is screwed up in and of itself.

In other news:
The Humphreys did stuff...Serena had a whole Guitar Hero montage that cracked me up, and Nate stomped all over my Eric/Jenny hopes.

I agree so much when it comes to Blair. I really do think she is absolutely desperate for people to love her, especially Nate. I also think the automatic love for everything Serena, that people seem to have, in combination with her mother, have all caused her to be this way.

With what you said about her acting that with Nate, I think she acts that way with everyone she comes into contact with. Sometimes she just tries to hard, instead of just being herself. I think thats why I love C/B so much because hes the first person she can actually be herself with. I like the side Chuck brings out in her.

I honestly believe Chuck does like her, but I think he's going about it the wrong way. I mean Chuck, is well Chuck, and he doesn't know how to react to these ~butterflies~ he's having. So he's manipulating her and Nate both to get what he wants. I have a feeling its really going to burn him in the end. I don't know if you read spoilers or not, so I don't want to spoil anything for you. LOL

Nate's whole family are retards. His dad is so pushy, and his mother is in denial, and such a weak person, imo. LOL.

Yeah, I think you're right. I think she can be herself to some extent with Serena, but because there's that whole dynamic of S taking everything she wants, it's not quite what she needs. She and Chuck both have so many of the same walls and artifices that they aren't fooled or kept away, so it's almost like they don't have any at all.

I honestly believe Chuck does like her, but I think he's going about it the wrong way.
I don't read spoilers (for now at least. I might get impatient eventually - two whole *weeks* til the next ep!), but what you're saying makes sense. When Chuck wants something, this is how he goes about getting it. I agree it'll probably burn him - drama! I can't wait.

Blair is basically the only one rowing that love boat. She tries so hard and Nate always lets her down. I can't stand him!

I think Blair was so shocked that Chuck could possibly like her because so far in her mind she never realized there was any possibility for love outside of her and Nate. It came as a shock to her, but the scene at the end. . . . I'm sorry, the way she tenderly reached for his hand was almost like saying "I know you're there for me"

You're such a genius! I didn't realize that whole "same wave length" thing until now. She really is the girl that can "change" him, and I love her for that! I don't think that Chuck is playing her.... I think even he is freaked out because he's not supposed to be like that. The two of them just make my heart flutter... XD

I think Nate means to be a good guy, and I know he's got a lot on his plate, but he can be a real jackass when it comes to Blair. I mean, he just keeps jerking her around because of his parents, and it doesn't seem to occur to him (or to anyone) that using Blair's honest feelings for business purposes is just a really awful thing to do to her.

I agree that Blair hadn't thought about love outside of Nate, and certainly not with Chuck. Even aside from the 'it's Chuck ' aspect, it's probably been way too long since someone went out there and actively pursued her or made her feel special. *glares at Nate*

I didn't even notice her reaching for Chuck's hand! Now I need to rewatch that scene. Many, many times. Such a hardship :-P

As far as Chuck playing her...I thin he honestly likes her, and I agree he is freaked out. I also think there's a fair amount of manipulation going on while he tries to get what he wants (ie, get Blair) - talking Nate out of dating her, telling her that Nate is just using her, the bet about whether or not Nate will call. But at baseline he think he honestly does care about her, and that this is just the way he operates. And he didn't tell her anything that wasn't true, or that she didn't need to hear. So really, I'm okay with it. This couple is killing me!

Um, yes. Wow, exactly. It is like I stole it from your brain, because I said exactly the same thing! At first I was surprised that Blair cottoned on so quickly; I expected Chuck to fall for her, but I didn't expect her to realize he was feeling feelings until further on down the road. But, hey, she's not taking him seriously. And who would, honestly. It's Chuck.

Re: Nate/Blair, I think they've done a clumsy job of depicting the relationship. I think it's obvious that Blair and Nate have a lot of history together and that she obviously loves and cares for him. But Nate has done next-to-nothing to indicate that he and Blair would have been together past the pilot if it hadn't been for his parents' machinations. I think next week is the flashback episode, and I'd love to see a scene in which they actually FUNCTION as a couple instead of delay the inevitable. I can't root for them like this, and I have a HUGE kink for couples that fall out of love only to fall head over heels back in.

Anyway, yes! Blair is totally the period-piece heroine of her own life. I am sure that she will have a lot of difficulty trying to figure out where Chuck the Cad fits into that, snicker.

haha, great minds think alike (or something).

I'd like to see functional Nate/Blair as well. A flashback ep, or something. There's got to be something aside from general good looks that's kept them dating since they were kids. And if they got together...well, that could work. My immediate reaction is 'but...poor Chuck!', but really, I didn't like the thought of Chuck/Blair until it happened, so I'm not going to rule anything out.

Oh God, now I have this image of Blair having a dream sequence for whatever ridiculous, contrived reason where she's a damsel in distress, Nate is prince charming, Chuck is The Cad, Serena is the other princess in love with the stableboy or whatever. It would amuse the hell out of me.
