five couples that make me geekishly happy
So, my basic purpose here is to transfer my fannish ramblings from my personal LJ to someplace else, so I'm not constantly harassing my non-fannish friends, or worrying about friending fannish people because of all the silly real-life drama I go on about in my other LJ. Step one is to take the fannish stuff from there and put it over here. So here we go, the fruits of procrastination. As of a few weeks ago (which pre-dates a number of things, including Chuck/Blair), the top five actual TV couples that make me embarrassingly happy.

5 - Oz & Willow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Yeah, so my favorites on that show were never Buffy and Angel (or Buffy and Spike). They were fine and all, but Willow and Oz! So adorable I *still* want to make high-pitched noises at the screen when I watch them. I mean, the first time Oz sees Willow (I think), she comes to a costume party all dressed up as a historically accurate Eskimo while everyone else knows that costume party = excuse to dress slutty, so she feels all awkward, and Oz thinks 'omg, who is the girl dressed as an Eskimo? Awesome! I must meet her!'  I was desperate for them to actual get together from then on. And I have always felt slightly bad and non-PC because I never liked Tara, even at the end, because I kind of can't get over 'but she broke up Willow and Oz!!' And later on, when Willow would make these dramatic assertions like 'Tara was the only good thing in my life! The only person I ever loved! Etc!' I would mentally go 'um, excuse me, Oz? Remember him? Does no one remember how awesome he was!?' *glower*

4 - Henry & Betty, Ugly Betty
I think I might have a soft spot for nerd-love (no shit?). He's an accountant! She has adult braces! Clearly this is Meant To Be. Also, the line last week  (er a couple of weeks ago now) where they are fighting and she snaps "so you followed me home??" and he replies "no, I followed you home because I didn't want you walking alone at night." At that point I think I actually said out loud "they need to get married and have a million babies."

3 - Ryan & Taylor, the last season of The OC
Honestly, I love them so much. From the minute Taylor nagged Ryan into pretending to be her boyfriend so she could divorce her French husband, I was cooing on the inside. They are screwed up, but just the right kind of screwed up for each other. I mean, they take turns stalking each other! She actually thinks he's funny! And where else do you get the exchange "Taylor, are you pretending to be asleep in the hopes that I'll tell you 'I love you' while you're unconscious?"/ "....Maybe."

2 -Logan & Veronica, the first season of Veronica Mars (after that it kind of goes to hell)
OK so I was rooting for Logan and Veronica, but never in a million years thought it would happen. Honestly, back when I started 'shippng them I thought Weevil and Veronica would be more likely to hook up (which I would have been perfectly happy with). And then, my favorite fanon-couple became reality! I actually clapped my hands when they kissed the first time. Yeah, I'm that much of a geek. After that season the Logan/Veronica stuff went downhill for me ('omg he slept with Madison!' is just a downer after there's been 'omg did he kill my best friend?'). However, even in the third season there were still some good moments. Logan smashing the cop car so he can get thrown in jail with the serial rapists that hurt Veronica. Or when he pretty much flung himself at the asshole making jackass comments even after Veronica told him that the guy had Mob connections and would destroy him. Again, they are just the right kind of screwed up for each other. Only, you know, they're pretty much a billion times less healthy than Ryan & Taylor ><

1 - Rory & Dean, the first two seasons of Gilmore Girls (ie, before the stupid adultery storyline).
I think I was never half so invested in a relationship on a TV show. I pretty much want to travel back and time and make Dean my high school boyfriend. He *built her a car*! He takes her to used book sales and carries her loot for her! He read Jane Austen to make her happy - and liked it! And I still get all goosebumpy when I watch the scene where they get back together at the end of the first season and make out in front of Chilton. Between this and Ryan/Taylor, you might call it 'insanely smart geek girls and the blue-collar boys who love them'. And then the show had to go and fuck it all up and make them adulturers, which is *awful* and made me want to throw things. But still, one of the reasons I wasn't upset that Rory and Logan broke up at the end of the series is because, in the back of my mind, I pretty much imagine that after Rory goes out and conquers the world, and Dean does something awesome in his own right, and they don't care about class or intimacy issues any more, then they'll find themselves in the exact right place in their lives to be with each other again. And I read every fic to that effect I can get my hands on.

So yeah, that was all pretty nerdy of me, but whatever. Happy thoughts!

Heeey, new friend!

I actually do not think we need to agree to disagree about Logan/Veronica! Words can really not express how much I loved them in Season 1. Aside from their undebatable chemistry, I thought they made sense on a number of levels. Their relationship moved the plot forward, was thematically relevant and let us into Logan's homelife without making us too suspsicious of Aaron. But after S1, they sort of stagnated into one of those inexplicably pre-destined couples that I almost always hate, and I moved on. Boy, did I ever move on.

Anyway, I also remember being totally shocked when Veronica and Logan kissed on that balcony. It absolutely threw me for a loop. Like you, I expected Veronica and Weevil to happen; it really felt like they were setting that narrative up in the first few episodes!

Hi! *waves*

I can't blame you for moving on from Logan/Veronica. I agree that part of the reason they were so exciting in Season One was because it was tied up with the plot. Part of the excitement about Logan/Veronica was also excitement about solving the mystery and the general screwed up world of Neptune. Once that connection dissolved with the end of Season One, the show didn't seem to quite know how to give them a storyline on their own. It seemed like the show always wanted to push the, to use your words, predestined couple - first with Duncan/Veronica, and then they pushed Logan/Veronica into that slot. The typical soap opera tropes - he hooked up with Madison! She didn't pick up the phone when he called! - just don't play well with Logan/Veronica. They're screwed up, semi-destructive drama, and it doesn't work so well for me when they're pushed into the 'typical teen romance' box.

I'll always wonder if they would have have gone to Veronica/Weevil if the show had lasted longer. I was also excited about that back in Season One. I guess that's what fanfic's for though.

first with Duncan/Veronica, and then they pushed Logan/Veronica into that slot.

Right, exactly. Part of the reason I was so drawn to them in the first place was because their relationship was actually subverting Duncan/Veronica, who had been framed as the obligatory pre-destined couple in S1.

They're screwed up, semi-destructive drama, and it doesn't work so well for me when they're pushed into the 'typical teen romance' box.

I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that VM was always so on-the-bubble, always desperate to draw in new and casual viewers. So they played down all of the (very dark!) history between them, which made the pairing kind of ridiculous to me. Throwing all the typical CW drama at them definitely didn't help, either. In that way, I think the show was kind of a victim of its lack of success.

I'll always wonder if they would have have gone to Veronica/Weevil if the show had lasted longer.

Well, I do know that if Francis Capra hadn't been injured over the hiatus between seasons 2 and 3 that he would have featured much more prominently into the storylines in the third season. The original plan was to have him work for Mars Investigations, but after he was hurt they had to write him out of that storyline (thus Weevil getting fired in the third episode and Veronica getting him the job at school). I know he was hurt, but I've always always always regretted that we were denied P.I. Weevil, sigh.

I agree that part of the sweetening of Logan and Veronica was probably an attempt to attract more viewers. But that always just seemed silly to me. I mean, if you draw in a viewer who's interested in the woobie True Love of Logan and Veronica, and they see a story about serial rape, then they're going to turn the channel. Viewers who might be interested in the darker aspects of the show are going to see the promos and not tune in. They're trying to attract the wrong viewership. Or rather, I should say 'were trying'. It's spilt milk, I really ought to let it go ~_~

I was so sad about Francis Capra's injury. Because of concern for the actor, but more selfishly because Weevil was one of my favorite VMars characters. I was so sad when Weevil was fired from Mars Investigations. I mean, I could have watched an entire spinoff based on that! I didn't realize he was originally slated to stay on, but I guess that's one more for my list of VMars-related 'coulda been's.

I cannot even tell you how much I agree. And I love your icon, by the way. I never really liked Ryan/Marissa even though they kept shoving it down our throats, but everything Ryan/Taylor did made me *so happy*. In my imagination, it was totally Taylor that grown-up-Ryan was talking to on the phone.

YES!!! I didn't like Marissa because I felt she always brought Ryan down and lead him to destruction. With Taylor it was more sweet and loving and I felt their relationship really took a diferent turn.

I agree completely. I remember that episode where Marissa was drinking and they got pulled over by the cops and Ryan almost got busted for breaking parole by having Marissa's open alcohol in the car...that still makes me so upset ~_~ Taylor got Ryan into crazy situations, but they were all way more benign. Pretending to be his sleep therapist, or pretending to be boyfriend and girlfriend are entertaining and fun, but I don't think that Taylor would've ever put Ryan in a situation where he could be in real trouble (which Marissa did, like, every other week).
