not dead
So I haven't posted in approximately forever -sorry about that. I'm in law school, and sometimes it pretty much eats me alive; this past semester has been really hectic. I've probably been de-friended for inactivity by everyone, and I wouldn't blame them in the slightest! But, well, the return of Gossip Girl has woken me from the dead (that and my desire to not study for exams), and I've felt the sudden urge to talk about it.
I think I didn't want to post about Gossip Girl back in the day because that pool party episode was just so ridiculous I couldn't say anything. However, The Thin Line Between Chuck And Nate was really fun - I enjoyed the re-shifting of emphasis to the friendship between Blair and Serena, especially when compared to the flame-out of Nate and Chuck. I thought Chuck's whole 'Arabian stallion' speech was pretty lame, but I've always felt that the whole 'rode hard, put away wet' thing was more cheesy and gross than clever. I get that Blair would feel devestated because of her fragile state of mind, but when he gave the schpiel onscreen I couldn't help but laugh at him.
But to be more up-to-date! I am *loving* the Bass-Van der Woodsen blended family. I love Chuck and Eric's interaction. And, since I'm spoiled, I know that Eric is gay - that saddened my hopes for Eric/Jenny, but I'm over it - and in my little imagination of what the show is, Eric *wants* to tell Serena, but she's too busy with Dan-Georgina angst, so he winds up coming out to Chuck, who is all 'aha! Great opportunity to be supportive and sleazy at the same time! Wonderful!' and takes him to some raunchy gay bar that is completely inappropriate. And Serena flips out, and it is wonderful. In my head. And even if it doesn't go that way, I am still enjoying the show.
I think that the Georgina and Serena storyline was amusing enough, although Dan is a huge idiot if he falls for whatever nonsense Georgina's cooking up. I appreciate the attempts to make Serena more interesting! Of course, after all this build-up, I really don't think they're going to be able to pull off Serena's Big Secret with any sort of proper emotional payoff unless Serena and Georgina secretly killed someone. Which would be pretty shark-jumping all on its own. But whatever, I'm just enjoying the ride.
I enjoyed the SAT-stress because most teen shows just kind of gloss over it (I remember on the OC it was like 'oh remember when I took the SAT awhile ago? And we didn't show it? Here's my score!'), and if I'm remember from high school, the SAT was *serious* amounts of panic. I mean, my parents had me in prep courses when I was a freshman. That is how I learned how to play Tetris on my graphing calculator. Oh stupid memories. Anyway, the spazziness held true to me, as did the characterization of Dan as a smart kid but a total choker. Although I did kind of want to remind them that you can take the SAT as many times as you want. I mean, Nate figured that out, why can't the rest of them? Unless they've changed the rules since then? That's entirely possible - the entire scoring is different, and now there's writing! When did I become old? And Blair vs Nelly Yuki...it was all a fairly stupid and mean exercise for Blair to go through, but I'm just fanwanking it in my head that Blair's not ok with herself unless she's scheming something. It's sort of like how when I'm stressed, I eat chocolate. When Blair's stressed, she either binges (bad!) or tries to ruin someone's life (bad, but not for her in the short term, so - progress!). And with her continuous inability to destroy Jenny, I figure she needs to destroy something just to get her mojo working again. And she needs to get herself match ready if she's going to try and destroy Chuck, which I'm hoping she'll do before they get together again (sort of like Mr Rochester's house burning down, only with Jane setting the fire. And Bertha somehow getting out alive and living happily ever after), but I'm not at all secure in that actually happening.
Speaking of Jenny, I am kind of loving this girl. I mean, on the one hand, she's running on crazy hubris and must be destroyed. But on the other hand, I admire her moxy. And I was really impressed with her acting in that scene where Rufus is trying to get her out of the stolen dress. Anyway, I very much enjoy the Jenny vs Blair stuff. And poor dog-walker boy doesn't know what he's gotten himself into. Much like Rufus, who is kind of an idiot - actually, I like to imagine that dog-walker boy is just as evil as Jenny, and is playing Rufus like mad. 'I wish all my friends parents cared enough to punish them when they screwed up' indeed.
I actually feel like I like Nate/Vanessa (Nate is acting like a *person*. A person I would enjoy being around! So shocking!), but I wish they'd given it a bit more time to develop. I mean, they went from 'never spoken' to 'dating' in one episode. One episode as the *C plot*. I felt like all the awesome moments happened off-screen - when did Nate figure out that she secretly wants to take the SAT and go to college? Which, by the way, I'm glad to hear - when she said she was taking all the practice exams to help Dan I wanted to throw things at her and scream 'Vanessa, *get a life*!!'. So, I am all in favor of Vanessa and Nate getting a life together.
